Founded in 1733, Georgia’s first city had become a major cotton marketplace by the time the Civil War broke out. Therefore, Savannah was the ultimate quest for General Sherman who presented it to President Lincoln as a Christmas present in 1864 following his infamous March to the Sea. The port city, which has a population of over 131,000, is known today for its historic 21 squares, impeccable inns, Low Country cuisine and huge St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, the second largest in the United States. The home of writers Flannery O’Connor and Conrad Aiken and composer Johnny Mercer, Savannah has risen to new acclaim in recent years with John Berendt’s best-selling novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, based on a true story and made into a movie. Historic antebellum homes line the streets of downtown Savannah, framed by trees covered in Spanish moss. Home to over 200 festivals each year, Savannah is a perfect host for your family vacation, corporate event, romantic getaway, group tour or solo expedition. The Historic District is about one mile square, ideal for walking and window shopping. Take a casual stroll by Savannah’s many museums, galleries, antique shops, churches, and secret gardens. Try several of the dozens of amazing restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood and down-home Southern fare to exquisite gourmet creations and sumptuous desserts. Take a 20-minute drive out to Tybee Island, where you can spend the day at Fort Pulaski or the Tybee Lighthouse and Museum…or you can simply enjoy the glorious stretch of sandy beach reaching out to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. For shopaholics, Savannah offers 2 large malls on the south end of town: Oglethorpe Mall with anchor stores Macy’s, Belk, Sears and JCPenney, and the Savannah Mall which offers Bass Pro Shop, Dillards, Target and Burlington Coat Factory. If you’re an outlet shopper, the Tanger Outlets of Hilton Head, SC are just a 45-minute drive north of Savannah. The Historic District offers plenty of souvenir shopping as well as eclectic, designer, vintage, and chain retailers and antique stores. Although the city is a bustling center of culture and progress, Savannah residents constantly work to preserve its history and unique character. Strict zoning requirements, façade restrictions, building usage terms and a common desire to hold on to the beauty and mystery of days gone by help to ensure the preservation of this charming and alluring Southern city.
